Hey folks, I need to do a presentation in a few weeks on the state of the art in airline frequent flyer programs. At Carlson we handle about ten different airlines, and of course I'm interested in anything any of our account or consulting people know about FFP's at their own airline client. But anyone else? How about all you travelers out there? Encounter anything in a frequent flyer program you thought was really cool?

-- Southwest's program is simple and not based on miles. If you fly 8 times in one year, you get a free flight. I like the simplicity of it, compared to figuring out how many miles you've flown and if it qualifies for certain rewards at other airlines.

What are wikis?

From Wikipedia:

"A wiki is computer software that allows users to easily create, edit and link web pages. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites, power community websites, and are increasingly being installed by businesses to provide affordable and effective Intranets or for use in Knowledge Management. Ward Cunningham, developer of the first wiki, WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as "the simplest online database that could possibly work".[1]"

The word "co-creation" is also associated with wikis, which is creativity where more than one person is involved[2]. It takes collaboration on a project or product and opens it up. There's no owner, no assistants. Everyone is on an equal level to bring the project, product, or idea to its highest potential.

ANYONE can change ANYTHING about this wiki, including the quote I've just pasted above which someone else has changed later on. Certain restrictions can be placed on edits by the administrator of a wiki, but most are open forums like this one. To make changes, just use the toolbox on the right or the "easy edit" button at the top of each page. Add text, links, pictures, video, charts, create pages, or invite other people to participate. If you have any problems accessing any of the features, please email the administrator.

Social Media Roadmap

I want to ask a variety of experts some questions about social media, but I'm not sure which ones to include. If you'd like to answer any of these that I've come up with, or add a few of your own, just edit this page:

1. When will social media stop being unique from other technology, and part of the mainstream instead?

2. Will the control over content and ideas ever be put back into businesses' hands, taken away from the consumers?

Who owns the copyright?

Who owns the words you are typing, crafting, editing painstakingly?

In part this is down to familiar environment. Your blog has a familiar environment. You are the author, you own the copyright. And wikis are familiar, too.

But it is very hard to determine who owns the copyright (and the distribution rights) here. Your selection includes, but is not limited to:

1 to 1 Media
Wetpaint
You
Some other licence such as GFDL, Creative Commons etc

If your contributors do not know then they are unlikely to contribute widely. The likelihood instead is that they will shy away and network about it.

With almost six million registered users, and counting, Wikipedia is the benchmark for wikis. The environment, though imperfect, and not wholly user friendly, is accepted by children and adults everywhere. It's familiar.

In order for a business wiki to be successful it must find a way of presenting its key resource - its editors - with an environment where they do not have to think.

This means that they can concentrate on the real purpose of the community without wondering too much how to use it. Things like wikilinks should be both obvious and under manual control.Headings and subheadings should be easy to nest more than one deep!Unpopulated wikilinks should be available in order to encourage the creation of new articles.
